During WW2 my grandfather was a victim among the 60,000 Jews forced to serve in a branch of the Hungarian armed forces known as FLU (Forced Labor Unit), which was never recognized by the Hungarian Government as part of the Royal Hungarian Army. A memorial to those killed in the FLU was finally inaugurated in 2016
The Hungarian Horsemen of the Puszta are Hungary's answer to cowboys. The skills of these whip-cracking horsemen have their roots in the tribes of Central Asia, and a history of herding and banditry. When visiting Eastern Hungary be sure to schedule time for an exciting equestrian show
Home to where my grandfather was born, the Puszta, which includes the UNESCO site of Hortobagy, is a wonderful region to visit with it's own regional culture, costumes, cuisine and storks nesting on rooftops. Amongst other traditional culinary delights, the goose liver, lake Balaton fresh water fish soup and goulash are not to be missed!
